Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

In a GLP study, conducted according to OECD guideline 201, the phytotoxicity of DEIPA to freshwater green alga was assessed in a static growth inhibition test. The 4-day EC50 was greater than 100 mg/L and the 3- and 4-day NOEC values for algal growth were 100 and 50 mg/L respectively (Kirk et al. 1999).

Key value for chemical safety assessment

EC50 for freshwater algae:
100 mg/L
EC10 or NOEC for freshwater algae:
50 mg/L

Additional information

In a GLP study (reliability 1), conducted according to OECD guideline 201, the phytotoxicity of DEIPA to fresh water green alga, Selenastrum capricornutum, was assessed in a static growth inhibition test over 4 days. The test was performed with an algal assay medium containing DEIPA at target concentrations of 0 (control), 3.13, 6.25, 12.5, 25, 50 and 100 mg/L (per cent of target values ranged from 84.4 to 104%). Three replicates per concentration were used with an average initial cell density of 15103 cells/ml. Algal cell densities were determined by electron particle counting on day 0 and daily thereafter. The effects of the test substance, measured relative to the controls, ranged from 8.4% growth stimulation at 6.5 mg/L to 18.5% growth inhibition at 100 mg/L by day 4. Total cell counts were not statistically significantly different from controls (p<0.05) with the exception of the value at 100 mg/L on day 4. The 3- and 4-day EC10 values for algal growth based on total cell count were determined to be 74.2 and 68.2 mg/L respectively. The 3 - and 4 -day EC50 and EC90 were greater than 100 mg/L and the 3- and 4-day NOEC values for algal growth were 100 and 50 mg/L respectively (Kirk et al. 1999).

In summarising this study, NICNAS (2009) concluded that DEIPA was not acutely harmful to algae.

Using the ECOSAR (v1.0) programme [class aliphatic amines] in EPISuite (v4.10) a 96-hr EC50 of 39.7 and 39.5 mg/L and a chronic value (ChV) of 46 and 39 mg/L (ppm) for fresh- and salt-water green algae has been predicted (US EPA, 2011).
