Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Toxicity to aquatic algae and cyanobacteria: Key studies: Read-across from experimental results obtained with the category analogue Potassium acetate. Study according to ISO guideline and GLP compliance.
The 72h- EC50 value for Magnesium Acetate is calculated to be > 362.75 mg/L with Skeletonema costatum. The NOEC value was estimated to be 362.75 mg/L.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

EC50 for marine water algae:
362.75 mg/L

Additional information

Key study:

Read-across from experimental results obtained with the category analogue Potassium acetate: Test method according to ISO guideline and GLP. The 72h- EC50 value for Potassium acetate was greater than 500 mg/L with Skeletonema costatum, and the NOEC value was estimated to be 500 mg/L.

Based on this experimental data and the molecular weights, the read-across approach is applied and the 72h- EC50 value for Magnesium Acetate is calculated to be > 362.75 mg/L, and the NOEC is 362.75 mg/L.

Supporting study:

Read-across from experimental results obtained with the analogue substance Acetic Acid.

Using analogous methods of the cell multiplication inhibition test, the toxicity threshold (TT) of Acetic acid was determined for green algae of the species Scenedesmus quadricauda. Toxicity threshold is defined as the pollutant concentration resulting in a mean extinction value that is ≥ 3% below the mean of the extinction value for the nontoxic dilutions of the test culture). The toxicity threshold of Acetic acid for Scenedesmus quadricauda was 4000 mg/L.

Based on this experimental data and the molecular weights, the read-across approach is applied and the Toxicity Threshold for Magnesium Acetate is calculated to be 4746.67 mg/L.
