Additional information

Data on physical and chemical properties for dimethyl sulphide (CAS 75 -18 -3) has been taken from a number of primary and secondary sources. The data in key studies from secondary sources are based on a critical evaluation of peer-reviewed data and the selected values are considered to be reliable and representative of the property under investigation. Information on the review process was documented in the introduction of the source. The use of Klimisch codes (Klimisch et al. 1997) was extended to these secondary sources and a reliability code of (2) valid with restrictions was assigned when using the authoritative secondary source.

Review of the collated information indicates that dimethyl sulphide is soluble with a relative density less than water. Dimethyl sulphide is not expected to accumulate in organic phase based on its Log Pow of 0.84. Dimethyl sulphide is expected to volatilize from surface waters based on the vapour pressure of 53.2kPa at 20°C and an estimated Henry's Law constant of 79.6 Pa.m-3.mole-1at 25°C.

The flash point and boiling point results for dimethyl sulphide indicate that this substance would be classified as Category 2 flammable liquid with the hazard statement "highly flammable liquid and vapour" under GHS.
