Description of key information

An activated sludge respiration inhibition test was performed with diglycerol according to OECD test guidelines and GLP principles.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

EC50 for microorganisms:
100 mg/L
EC10 or NOEC for microorganisms:
100 mg/L

Additional information

The influence of Diglycerol on the respiration rate of activated sludge was investigated after a contact time of 3 hours. The study was performed according to OECD guideline No. 209. A concentration of 100 mg/l was tested in duplicate.Optimal contact between the test substance and test organisms was ensured applying continuous aeration and stirring during the three hours exposure period. Thereafter, oxygen consumption was measured and recorded for approximately 10 minutes. Since all criteria for acceptability of the test were met, this study was considered to be valid. No significant inhibition of respiration rate of the sludge was recorded at 100 mg Diglycerol per litre and therefore no further testing was needed. Hence, the EC50of Diglycerol exceeded 100 mg/l (based on nominal concentrations), and the NOEC was determined to be 100 mg/l.
