A study with Potassium tert-butanolate was performed according to OECD guideline 401 (Evonik, 1989). 5 rats received 510, 631, or 794 mg/kg bw of Potassium tert-butanolate by oral gavage. At 631 mg/kg 4/10 rats died, at an applied dose of 794 7/10 animals died. The calculated LD50 was 690 mg/kg bw for male and female.
No data are available for dermal and inhalative acute toxicity and testing is not meaningful due to its corrosive properties.
Justification for classification or non-classification
Based on the available acute oral toxicity data for Potassium tert-butanolate, criteria for classification are fulfilled for acute toxicity with R22 (harmful if swallowed), according to 67/548/EEC and acute tox. Cat 4, H302 according to 1272/2008/EC (CLP, GHS).
But for classification purposes, it has to be considered that Potassium tert-butanolate is classified as skin corrosive Cat 1A (H314) or C: R35. The acute oral toxicity is based on corrosive properties of the test substance, therefore no classification is proposed.
