Description of key information

There is considerable hydrolysis of 1-chlorobutane with DT50 values ranging from 24 to 201 hours.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Half-life for hydrolysis:
101 h
at the temperature of:
40 °C

Additional information

The hydrolysis of 1-chlorobutane was investigated according to OECD Guideline 111 (Study director 1990a). The test was performed at pH 4.0, 7.0 and 9.0 in sterile buffer solutions at a temperature of 40, 50 and 60 °C. After 5 days of incubation, the hydrolytical degradation was more than 10% of initial concentrations in the range of 42 to 145 mg/L for all temperatures and pH values (pH 9: borate buffer; pH 7: phosphate buffer; pH 4: citrate buffer). The half-life times varied between 24 and 201h, with a half-life time of 101 hours at pH 7.0 and 40°C. With increasing temperature and increasing pH, the half-life will be shorter.
