Description of key information

Short-term toxicity to fish:

The test for DL-Menthol with fish (Danio rerio) a LC50 of 22.3 mg/L (geom. mean from nominal concentration) after 96 hours is obtained. The study was conducted according to Umweltbundesamt (UBA) -Verfahrensvorschlag: "Letale Wirkung beim Zebrabaerbling Brachydanio rerio, Mai 1984.

Short-term toxicity to aquatic invertebrates (Read-across):

The acute toxicity of L-Menthol (CAS no. 2216-51-5) to invertebrates (Daphnia magna) was determined in a static immobilisation test according to EU Method C.2 (Acute Toxicity for Daphnia) which is similar to the OECD Guideline 202. After 48 hours of exposure an EC50 of 26.6 mg/L (measured) is obtained.

Toxicity to aquatic algae and cyanobacteria:

With a growth inhibition test according to EU Method C.3 (Algal Inhibition test) on alga (Desmodesmus subspicatus) (former name: Scenedesmus subspicatus) which is equivalent to OECD Guideline for Testing of Chemicals No. 201 a 72-hour EC50 of 16.2 mg/L and a 72-hour NOEC of 4.6 mg/L was determined for DL-Menthol. Effective concentrations are based on the arithmetic mean of measured concentrations.

Toxicity to microorganisms:

A test with activated sludge with a duration fo 3 hours was performed according to the OECD Guideline 209 which is equivalent to ISO 8192 (Test for Inhibition of Oxygen Consumption by Activated Sludge). For DL-Menthol an EC50 of 306 mg/L was observed.
