In a modified MITI test according to OECD TG 301C using mixed inoculum taken from 10 different sites in Japan (municipal STPs, industrial STPs, lakes, rivers and bays) biodegradation was determined to be 86% after 28 days (based on O2 consumption). Therefore, the test substance was considered to be readily biodegradable (J-CHECK, NITE, OECD 301C, 1997).

In a further test conducted according to OECD guideline 302 B (BASF AG, Company study no. 1051/11, 1980) the degradation of the test substance by industrial activated sludge reached 99% after 7 days. Thus, the substance was easily eliminated from water mainly by biodegradation.

While the substance is readily biodegradable in freshwater systems, it is not readily biodegradable in seawater as concluded from an OECD 306 test published by Eide-Haugmo et al. (2009/2012). Under the current test conditions no biodegradation was observed (<5% after 28 days, Eide-Haugmo et al, 2009/2012).

In conclusion, 3 -aminopropan-1 -ol (CAS 156-87-6) is readily biodegradable (according to OECD criteria).
