Koc values determined from 19 different subsurface soils were in the range of 170 - 880 (logKoc 2.23 - 2.94) yielding an average Koc value of 370 (Banerjee 1985). With reference to Swann (1983) 1-chloro-2-methylbenzene has a minor to middle potential to sorb on soil or sediment and a less migration potential to ground water.

1 -Chloro-2 -methylbenzene is characterized by a calculated Henry's Law Constant of 12.66 hPa m³/mol at ambient temperatures (e.g. 20- 25 °C) (Currenta, 2009). According to Thomas, cited in the "Handbook of Chemical property Estimation Methods" (Lyman, 1980), the substance tends volatilize rapidly from the liquid phase.

The distribution of 1 -chloro-2 -methylbenzene in a "unit world" was calculated according to the Mackay fugacity model level I (Currenta, 2008) assuming air as target compartment receiving 99.7 % of the test item, followed by water (0.2 %), soil (0.05 %) and sediment (0.05 %).
