Description of key information

Key study:- Vryenhoef & Mullee (2011) Growth inhibition study on aquatic plants (OECD 201, EPA OPPTS 850.5400 and EPA OPP 122-2): 72 h EC50 16 mg/L growth rate (95 % CL 14-17 mg/L); 72 h NOEC 6.25 mg/L; 72 h LOEC 12.5 mg/L. The 96 hour EC50 was determined to be 17 mg/L (growth rate), 13 mg/L (cell number) and 12 mg/L (biomass). The NOEC was determined to be 6.25 mg/L and the LOEC 12.5 mg/L.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

EC50 for freshwater algae:
16 mg/L
EC10 or NOEC for freshwater algae:
6.25 mg/L

Additional information

The key study for this endpoint, Vryenhoef and Mullee (2011), was performed in accordance with the standardised guidelines OECD 201, EPA OPPTS 850.5400 and EPA OPP 122-2. The study was performed in line with GLP and reported to a high standard. In accordance with Klimisch (1997), the study was assigned a reliability score of 1. The 72 and 96 hour EC50 values were determined to be 16 and 17 mg/L (growth rate), 12 and 13 mg/L (cell number) and 11 and 12 mg/L (biomass), respectively. The 72 and 96 hour NOEC values were both determined to be 6.25 mg/L and the 72 and 96 hour LOEC values were both determined to be 12.5 mg/L.

The EC50 for growth rate (ErC50) was selected as the key value for risk assessment as it is independent of variables that can be present in the study design.
