This study was conducted in accordance with Method A1 "Melting/Freezing Temperature" of Commission Regulation (EC) No 440/2008 of 30 May 2008. This study was performed in compliance with UK GLP standards (Schedule 1, Good Laboratory Practice Regulations 1999 (SI 1999/3106 as amended by SI 2004/0994).

The results for the freezing temperature determinations indicated much super-cooling of the test item prior to solidifying. This effect was confirmed using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), whereupon the test item did not freeze until the calorimeter had reached a temperature of -30 degrees celsius (243 kelvin), and then, upon warming, the test item melted at -13.4 degrees celsius (259.8 kelvin). The DSC thermogram is presented in the study report.

Due to the associated problems of super-cooling of the test item, a third freezing temperature determination was subsequently carried out, using crushed glass and a lower cooling rate in an attempt to aid the seeding process. However, the results again indicated much super-cooling of the test item, and a freezing temperature of -12 degrees celsius (261 kelvin).

Applicant's summary and conclusion

Conclusions:
The freezing temperature has been determined to be less than or equal to 4.5 +/- 0.5 degrees celsius (278 +/- 0.5 kelvin). However, the results also indicated much super-cooling of the test item.
