Description of key information

According to REACH Annex VIII, 9.2.2.1 column 2, abiotic hydrolysis studies do not need to be conducted if the substance is readily biodegradable. In the OECD 301D test, ammonium thiocyanate is biodegraded 80% after 28 days, thus is considered readily biodegradable. Thus a waiver is indicated for this category of compounds, since the hydrolysis test will provide little additional information since rapid mineralization in the environment is already assumed. Additionally, thiocyanates are salts that readily dissolve in water and completely dissociate into their separate ions, and thus will have no tendency to hydrolyse.
