Description of key information

The acute oral LD50 of the substance in the rat is reported to be 130 mg/kg bw (Musch & Hoffer, 1990); no data are available for acute dermal or inhalation toxicity however waiver are appropriate for these endpoints due to the corrosive nature of the substance.

Ammonium hydrogendifluoride is listed on Annex I of Directive 67/548/EEC with classification as Corrosive (R34) 'Causes burns'. Testing for acute dermal and inhalation toxicity is not required and cannot be justified for reasons of animal welfare.

Justification for classification or non-classification

Ammonium hydrogendifluoride is listed on Annex I of Directive 67/548/EEC with classification as (R25) 'Toxic if swallowed'. This classification is consistent with the data availabel: no chnage to this classification is proposed.
