Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

An algal growth inhibition study according to OECD guideline 201/EU C.3 was conducted. The NOELR (WAF) value of di(2-ethylhexyl) peroxydicarbonate for Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata based on growth rate is ≥ 100 mg/L (nominal) which corresponds to a measured NOEC of the degradation product 2-ethylhexan-1-ol of 7.26 mg/L.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

EC10 or NOEC for freshwater algae:
7.26 mg/L

Additional information

In a 72 hour toxicity study, cultures of Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata were exposed to bis(2-ethylhexyl) peroxydicarbonate at nominal concentrations of 0 and 100 mg/L in a limit test under static conditions in accordance with OECD 201/EU C.3. The test item is a mixture of 2 constituents with different solubility and physicochemical properties. Test solutions were prepared according to the WAF methodology (water accommodated fraction).

Concentrations of the test item were measured by GC-MS. The parent substance was quantified via its degradation product 2-ethylhexan-1-ol. The final concentrations of the test item were within 80 % of initial.

The NOELR (WAF) value based on growth rate is ≥ 100 mg/L (nominal) which corresponds to a measured concentration of 7.26 mg/L.

Remark: The test was done following the WAF procedure (since the test item contains 25 % isododecane). Measurements were made for the degradation product 2-ethylhexan-1-ol by GC-MS. Isododecane is stated to be practically insoluble in water (no exact values available). The water solubility of the degradation product 2-ethylhexan-1-ol is much higher compared to isododecane. However, isododecane may contribute to the overall toxicity observed in the test. Therefore, the test can be regarded as a worst-case that can be used in the assessment of the pure peroxide substance itself (which is, however, not stable without the additive).
