Description of key information

EL50 (14 d) > 1000 mg/kg soil d.w. (germination in soil) (Lactuca)
EC50 (21 d) = 1.7 – 47 mg/L (germination in nutrient solution) (Lactuca)

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

A plant toxicity study is available for heptane by Hulzebos et al. (1993). Lettuce (Lactuca sativa) seeds were exposed to soil treated with Normal-Heptane at concentrations of 1000 mg/kg (soil dry weight). Examination of germination on day 7 and 14 showed no effects. The authors also assessed germination in a nutrient solution containing Normal-Heptane. On day 21 the LC50 results for Normal-Heptane were: 1.7 mg/L (test 1) and 47 mg/L (test 2).

Further data are reported in Boyles (1976) on two other species, including the genera Daucus and Helianthus. However, the documentation on the samples and results is insufficient to rate this study for reliability.
