Two chronic aquatic invertebrate ecotoxicity studies are available, with m- and p-xylene as the test substances. Niederlehner et al (1998) investigated the effects of m-xylene on Ceriodaphnia dubia reproduction over 7 days. TNO (2005) investigated the effects of p-xylene on Daphnia magna reproduction over 21 days following OECD 211. Both studies included analytical confirmation of the exposure concentrations.

The reported NOEC from the two studies are similar, 1.17mg/L and 1.57mg/L. The most conservative result from the individual isomers will be used in the risk assessment.
