Description of key information

1H-Benzotriazole shows a high stability towards abiotic degradation processes. The molecule is hydrolytically stable (by Tier 1 test, OECD guideline 121). Furthermore, the molecular structure shows no hydrolysable functional groups. In context of the safety assessment the substance is considered hydrolytically stable with a default half-life of 365 days.
Photodegradation is considered a minor pathway for the removal of the substance. The transformation in air is unlikely due to the low volatility of the substance from the water compartment. Nevertheless, available estimations by QSAR calculations indicate a potential for reactions with atmospheric radicals.
Investigations of photochemical transformations of 1H-Benzotriazole in water show a very complex behaviour depending on external conditions like intensity of sunlight, presence of DOM etc. In several studies the behaviour under different conditions was investigated showing half-lives from minutes to several days. In summary, a half-life of two to four weeks under environmental conditions seems to be likely.
For the photochemical transformation in soil no relevant data are available.
In total, a significant abiotic degradation pathway was not identified. The phototransformation in water may play a minor role in the degradation of the substance. The identified potential transformation products could enhance the biodegradability.
