Sodium methanolate is classified as corrosive to skin and eyes according to Annex VI of the CLP regulation (EC 1272/2008). Based on the skin and eye irritation data, it can be assumed that sodium methanolate will also cause irritation / corrosion to the mucous membranes of the upper respiratory tract in case of an exposure via the inhalation route. At non-irritant concentrations / dose levels, no systemic effects are expected after repeated dose exposure to methanolates via any route as indicated by the available information on the hydrolysis / dissociation products. It is unlikely that exposure to sodium methanolate at non-irritant concentrations / dose levels would result in exposure to toxic doses of the hydrolysis / dissociation products, in particular methanol. Therefore, no DNEL was derived for sodium methanolate for systemic effects via inhalation or the dermal route of exposure. Based on the available data it is not possible to derive a DNEL for local effects, since local corrosion is the leading effect which does not provide dose-response data. Therefore, a qualitative assessment as recommended by REACH Guidance documents (Part E (Risk Characterisation) and Chapter R.13 (Risk Management Measures and Operational Conditions)) is more appropriate and the DNELs of the hydrolysis products sodium hydroxide and methanol were not taken into account for the risk assessment of sodium methanolate.

Since exposure of sodium methanolate for the general public is precluded, DNELs for the general population are not relevant and thus not derived. The DNELs of the hydrolysis products sodium hydroxide and methanol were also not taken into account as no risk assessment is necessary for the general population.
