Description of key information

Methylparaben is resistant to hydrolysis in hot and cold water.
Above pH7, appreciable hydrolysis occurs, producing p-hydroxy benzoic acid (PHBA) and methanol.
In strongly alkaline solutions, methylparaben hydrolyzes to the corresponding carboxylic acid, which then becomes ionized.
The rate of hydrolysis is pH-dependent.

Additional information

According to the adaptation criteria specified in column 2 of annex VIII of the REGULATION (EC) No 1907/2006 Annex VIII, (Hydrolysis as a function of pH) a study does not need to be conducted if the substance is readily biodegradable. This substance is readily biodegradable (see chapter 5.2.1) and therefore the study is not required.
