Description of key information

MCA is a weak acid (pKa = 2.86) under environmental conditions MCA will occur in anionic or salt form e.g. sodium monochloroacetic acid (SMCA). Therefore ecotoxicological data from both MCA and SMCA can be used for hazard and risk assessment.

Based on the physicochemical properties (log Kow = -3.8, solubility = 822 g/L), the substance is expected to have a very low potential to adsorb to soil and sediment and will therefore stay in the water phase.

Also, due to the low log Kow SMCA does not have a potential to bioaccumulate.

The substance is readily biodegradable (aerobically as well as anaerobically) and will therefore not persist in the environment.
