Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Additional information

The effect of benzonitrile on Scendedesmus quadricauda was assessed in a static laboratory study at pH 7.0 and T = 27 °C. The effect level based on population growth is 75 mg/l.

Further details are not reported in the secondary reference (Hazardous Materials. Benzonitrile) citing Bringmann & Kühn (Bringmann, G. and Kühn, R. 1977. Limiting values for the damaging action of water pollutants to bacteria (Pseudomonas putida) and green algae (Scendesmus quadricauda) in the ... Wasser Abwasser Forsch. 10 (3 -4): 87-98).

In other studies Bringmann & Kühn (not cited in this dossier) examined the influence of chemical substances on population growth of Scenedesmus quadricauda. In these studies the examined effect is the toxicity threshold (TT). The TT is determined using an analogous method of the cell multiplication test. The concentration at which the inhibitory action of a pollutant begins is present in that dilution from a series of dilutiuons of the test substance having, at the end of the test period, a mean extinction value that is >/= 3 % below the mean value of the extinction value for non-toxic dilutions of the test cultures.

Therefore, it is assumed that the described "effect on population growth" is equivalent to the TT value.
