Additional information

Ready biodegradability of itaconic acid (CO2 evolution test) was conducted according to OECD guideline 301 B (1992). The total biodegradation after 3 d and 10 d was 34.5% and 90.9%, respectively, and 100% after 18 d. The cumulative CO2 evolved from itaconic acid during 28 days of incubation was 196.9 mg.

In another study (Hoechst AG Frankfurt 80, 1990), degradation = 96% after 13d.

In conclusion, itaconic acid is readily biodegradable.
