Guidance on Safe Use
Administrative data
First-aid measures
Remove the victim to well-ventilated area. Take off contaminated clothes. Wash the parts of the body contacted with plenty of soap and water. If the victim is unconscious or not breathing, give artificial respiration or supplemental oxygen. Bring victim to nearest medical facility, along with this material safety data sheet.
- By inhalation:
Remove the victim into fresh air. If unconscious, maintain adequate airway and respiration. If not breathing, give artificial respiration. If breathing with difficulty or if breathing problems develop, seek immediate medical attention. If the patient has ingested the product, avoid mouth contact in artificial respiration using a barrier device.
- By skin contact:
Immediately wash area of contact with soap and plenty of water. Remove contaminated clothes and seek medical attention if any symptoms occur. Wash the contaminated clothes before reusing them, and throw away any contaminated shoes.
- By eye contact:
Rinse immediately with plenty of water for 15 minutes, keeping eyelids open. Do not apply neutralizing agents. Seek medical attention.
- By ingestion:
Do not provoke vomiting. Spontaneous vomiting may occur and should not be avoided. In this case position the patient to avoid aspiration of vomit. Seek medical attention immediately. Never give anything orally to an unconscious person.
Fire-fighting measures
Use an extinguishing agent suitable for surrounding fires. Do not use water on fires when suspected molten metals are present
- Fire Fighting Procedure:
Wear self-contained breathing apparatus (operated in a positive pressure mode) and protective clothing/goggles to prevent contact with skin and eyes. Do not stay in dangerous zone without selfcontained breathing apparatus.
- Fire/Explosion Hazards:
Non-combustible. Has a fire-promoting effect due to release of oxygen. Molten metals can produce fumes, vapours and dust that can be toxic and/or respiratory irritants. The product or its dust can react with strong acids.
Accidental release measures
Utilize recommended protective clothing and equipment for prevention of inhalation and contact with skin, mucous membranes and eyes
- Environmental precautions:
Avoid the product from contaminating water and ground water.
- Methods for cleaning up:
Contain and collect the spill. Clean spills in a manner that does not disperse dust into the air. If necessary cover the spill with plastic sheeting or apply water mist over the product. Collect wash water for approved disposal. Avoid the use of solvents. Do not use compressed air, compressed gas
or dry sweeping cleaning methods.
Handling and storage
Use personal protection equipment as described in item 'Exposure Controls/Personal protection'. Observe very strict hygiene, avoid contact with skin. Avoid raising dust. Do not eat, drink, chew gum, smoke or carry smoking materials while handling product and in any process area. In case of intoxication symptoms immediately suspend work and proceed according to item 'First-aid measures'. Remove contaminated clothing and equipment, and was hand and face before entering the area provided for eating and drinking.
- Storage:
Store in a cool, dry and well ventilated area, away from incompatible substances. Store bulk material in an isolated area, container or big bag.

*) Exposure controls
Occupational exposure controls:
- Respiratory protection: required when dusts are generated. Filter P2 (DIN 3181) for solid and liquid particles of harmful substances
- Hand protection: wear nitrile rubber, 0.11 mm layer thickness, breakthrough time > 480 min for both full and splash contact. Employees should wash their hands before eating, drinking or using tobacco products.
- Eye protection: In case of dust production use dust-tight protective goggles.
- Skin protection: Use dustproof clothing. Employees should wash their hands and face before eating, drinking or using tobacco products.
Additional Protective Measures: Emergency showers and eye wash stations should be available. Educate and train employees in the safe use and handling of hazardous chemicals.
Stability and reactivity
- Materials to avoid: Aluminium, metals in powder form, performic acid, perchloric acid + glycerol. Violent reactions possible with carbides, sulphur oxides, hydrogen peroxide, halogens and alkenes. Risk of ignition or formation of inflammable gases or vapours with boron, alkali metals, hydrides, silanes, vegetable and animals oils, fluorine + glycerol.
- Hazardous decomposition products: The material could decompose at high temperatures generating lead fumes
Disposal considerations
