Description of key information

The effect of glycerin exposure over an 8 day exposure period was examined with Scenedesmus quadricauda and Microcystis aeruginosa. Diffferences in turbidity were measured after 8 days and values greater than 3% (EC3) were considered significant. The EC3 was >10,000 mg/L and 2900 mg/L for S. quadricauda and M. aeruginosa.
A 28 day study with 16 different species demonstrated that glycerol was relatively nontoxic.
These values are above the limit dose of 100 mg/L.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

EC50 for freshwater algae:
2 900 mg/L
