Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

2-Propenoic acid, octadecyl ester is readily biodegradable (but failing the 10 - day window) and an indirect exposure to soil via sewage sludge transfer is unlikely. In addition, direct releases to soil from point sources are not known and very unlikely due to the extremely low vapour pressure of the substance. Therefore, significant exposure of terrestrial compartments is not expected. At production sites, the ester is handled in closed systems for polymerisation. Diffuse releases into the environment from residual monomers in the polymeric products are not of concern due to the extremely low vapour pressure of the substances. The ester is metabolised via cleavage of the ester bond, the resulting moieties are substrates for the fatty acid metabolism and for the valine pathway of the tricarboxylic acid cycle, respectively. These are pivotal metabolic pathways of all organisms, and therefore, biomagnification in the food chain and, in consequence, secondary poisoning are not expected.

Although the kinetic strong depend on water solubility. In addition it cannot be excluded that the long C-chain might hinder the enzym access to the ester bound.

In conclusion, based on such low exposure levels studies on terrestrial organisms are not required.
