The selective action of sodium sulfanilate between groundnut and asparagus long bean is evidently due to differential effect on folic acid biosynthesis in the different plants.

Supporting study: Bibliographic source Kung:

A conjugate of sulfanilate was demonstrated in the sodium sulfanilate-treated groundnut plant. The molecular weight of the conjugate was found to be much greater than that of either sodium sulfanilate of p-acetamidobenzenesulfonic acid. It was thus believed that the differential inhibition of the biosynthesis of folic acid by sodium sulfanilate in groundnut and asparagus long bean plants is due to the remarkable different affinities of the enzyme of the folic acid synthesizing systems in these plants for sodium sulfanilate.
