Materials and methods

Type of study / information:
Acute toxicity. injected intraperitonally(mice) and subcutaneously (rats)
Test guideline
Qualifier:
no guideline available
Principles of method if other than guideline:
In this study BaCl2 was injected in mice and rats, and the LD50 value was determined. Also, the study was conducted in order to determine the influence of potassium on the course of acute intoxications with barium compounds. In addition, rabbits and rats were injected with BaCl2 in order to determine the effect of BaCl2 on the potassium level in the blood serum.
GLP compliance:
no

Results and discussion

Any other information on results incl. tables

LD50 (mice): 60.5 mg/kg

LD50 (rats): 27.5 mg/kg

Barium chloride (intraperitoneal dose of 20 mg/kg) 30 minutes after its injection into rats lowers the level of potassium from 17.6 mg per 100 ml. (the control level) to 11.9 mg per 100 ml. Barium chloride subcutaneously also causes a lowering of the potassium levels in the blood serum of rabbits.
