Description of key information

The test substance has no oxidizing properties.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Oxidising properties:

Additional information

In a GLP compliant study, performed according to EU method A.17, the oxidizing properties of the test substance were determined (Ciba-Geigy 1991). Hot platinum wire (approximately 1000°C) was used as an ignition source. In all the tested mixtures only smouldering fire was observed. For the 30% test substance:70% cellulose mixture and the 50:50 mixture, none of the six test propagated to the first reference mark. For the 40:60 mixture extinction was observed after 50mm before the second reference mark was reached. The maximum burning rate of the reference mixture barium nitrate/cellulose (60:40) was 2.7 mm/s. Overall, it was concluded that the test substance had no oxidizing properties.

Justification for classification or non-classification

As the test substance has no oxidising properties, classification is not needed according to the Directive 67/584/EEC and according to the EU Classification, Labelling and Packaging of Substances and Mixtures (CLP) Regulation (EC) No. 1272/2008.
