Description of key information

The Log Kow for tetrapropenyl phenol is 7.14 as determined by the slow-stir method.
No Temperature is given, however the OECD guideline states that test should be conducted at 25°C. No pH is stated.
The methodology followed was the “Partition Coefficient (n-Octanol/Water): slow stirring method – proposal for a new guideline – OECD”.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Log Kow (Log Pow):
7.14
at the temperature of:
25 °C

Additional information

The partition coefficient of tetrapropenyl phenol in n-octanol/water has been measured using several different methods by an HERTG member company with a commercial (>99% purity) sample (Dutta 2003). The quoted values relate to the C12 component (the HPLC method used a C12-rich distillation fraction of the commercial material). No temperature is given in the test report, but it is presumed to be in the range 20-25 °C. The preferred value for the Log Kow for tetrapropenyl phenol is 7.14 as determined by the slow-stir method.

A reliability rating of 2 was assigned to this study, according to the criteria of Klimisch, 1997 as the methodology followed was the “Partition Coefficient (n-Octanol/Water): slow stirring method – proposal for a new guideline – OECD”.

Other methods were used by Dutta, 2003 which consisted of HPLC and dialysis methods. The values for these studies are 7.96 and 7.73 respectively.

A reliability rating of 2 was assigned to these studies, according to the criteria of Klimisch, 1997 as guidelines were generally followed.

The modeled value for Log Kow of 7.17 was obtained using KOWWIN v1.67 (based on SMILES input).

It should be noted that EPIWIN predictions are not validated for these types of sustances and should be used with caution, hence a reliability of 4 has been assigned according to the criteria of Klimisch, 1997.

The supporting studies are in good agreement with the key parameter.
