Additional information

Irritation to skin was assessed in a study performed according to federal guidelines and in large part equivalent to OECD guideline 404 (BASF, 1979). 1 ml of pure pentane-1,5-diol was applied to the intact or scarificated back skin of one male and five female Vienna White rabbits for twenty hours. As result the mean scores for erythema and edema between 24 to 48 hours after application were 0.6 and 0.1, respectively. Thus, no irritation to skin was observed, even after an application period of 20 hour.

In another study, five albino rabbits received open application of 0.01 ml to the clipped belly skin for 24 hours (Smyth, 1962). As result, no irritation was reported.

Irritation to eyes was evaluated in a study performed accord according to federal guidelines and equivalent to OECD guideline 405 (BASF, 1979). 0.1 ml of pure petane-1,5-diol was instilled into the eyes of two male and four female Vienna White rabbits and reactions were evaluated for eight days. The resulting scores for corneal opacity, iris, conjunctival erythema and chemosis were 1, 0.2, 1,4 and 0.6, respectively. Thus, no irritation to eyes was observed.

Justification for classification or non-classification

Due to negative results in studies performed according federal guidelines, no classification as irritant to skin and eye is required.
