Toxicity to aquatic algae and cyanobacteria
Administrative data
Link to relevant study record(s)
Description of key information
High quality test data is available on the acute toxicity of copper slag to algae. Lowest short-term toxicity value observed is greater than 100 mg/l >10 to < or equal 100 mg/l . The 72 h EC50 for P. subcapitata in the range of 155 mg/l to 965 mg/l and the 72 h EC50 for N. pelliculosa in the range of 1047 to >3125 mg/l, obtained from the GLP bridging study (Wenzel, 2011)
Key value for chemical safety assessment
Additional information
Reliable GLP studies (Wenzel, 2010) were performed to determine the toxicity of mesocosm water extracts of five different slags and one basalt control on the growth of the unicellular fresh water green algae Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata and diatom Navicula pelliculosa exposed for a test period of 72 hours under static conditions according to OECD 201(1). EC50 values in the range of 155 mg/l to 965 mg/l for P. subcapitata) and in the range of 1047 to 4474 mg/l for N. pelliculosa were assessed. EC10 values in the range of 87.9 mg/l to 340 mg/l for P. subcapitataand in the range of 795 mg/l to 3426 mg/l N. pelliculosa were assessed. Typical slag samples have been tested which were within the composition concentration range defined in IUCLID Section 1.2.
A further OECD 201 guideline study (Sauerwald and Weiss, 2004) investigated the toxicity of copper slag onalgaein a 72h growth inhibition test. No toxic effects were observed at tested concentrations. IC 10 and IC 50 values of > 100 g/l were assessed. Typical slag sample has been tested which was within the composition concentration range defined in IUCLID Section 1.2.
The calculated classification via Toxic Unit approach (Higher Tier MeClas Tool) resulted in "Hazardous to aquatic Environment Acute Category 3" classification for the UVCB substance. Based on this result, the related criteria provided the estimated value for toxicity to aquatic algae (see EU CLP Annex I Table 4.1.0):72hr ErC50 (for algae) >10 to < or equal 100 mg/l
Using a weight of evidence approach, the lowest short-term toxicity acute toxicity of copper slag to algae is greater than 100 mg/l or >10 to < or equal 100 mg/l. which means No classification or Acute 3 classification.
The following information is taken into account for effects on algae / cyanobacteria for the derivation of PNEC:
