Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Based on the available data, substances in the category Rosin adducts and rosin adduct salts are not considered readily biodegradable.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

Reliable studies are available for several members of this category. The studies are all GLP-compliant and conducted to standard guidelines.

Inveresk Research (2002) is a GLP-compliant study that followed the standard OECD 301B test guideline. For rosin, maleated, ca.0.34% degradation was demonstrated after 28 days and ca.18.92% degradation after 28 days for Rosin, fumarated / maleated. Neither of these substances would be considered readily biodegradable on the basis of these results

Rosin, fumarated, reaction products with formaldehyde is not being registered under REACH, but would fall within the category definition. 26% degradation was demonstrated after 28 days in an OECD 301B study (Harlan Laboratories, 2010). This would not be considered readily biodegradable.

In an OECD 301D study with Rosin, fumarated the test item achieved ca. 15% degradation after 28 days (Water Quality Institute, 1993) and is not readily biodegradable.

Inveresk Research (2002) is a GLP-compliant study that followed the standard OECD 302B test guideline. The biodegradation of the substance Resin and Rosin Acids, Maleated, Potassium salts (CAS 85408-27-4) was determined to be 52.6% after 28d. The substance is not considered readily biodegradable.

Reliable studies are available for various substances that would fall within the category definition, and the studies cover both fumarated and maleated substances, it is considered to be appropriate to read these results across to all category members. Based on the available data, substances in the category Rosin adducts and rosin adduct salts are not considered readily biodegradable.
