Ready biodegradability has been investigated in a shake flask test conducted according to EPA test methods. Diethyl phthalate was found to be readily biodegradable.

In accordance with REACH Regulation 1907/2006, Annex IX, Column 2, simulation tests of biodegradation in water, sediment and soil do not need to be conducted as the substance is readily biodegradable. Values have been calculated using a Fugacity model according to Mackay, Level III using EPIWIN (v.4.11) - Half life in water: 360 hours; Half life in sediment: 3240 hours; Half life in soil: 720 hours.
