Data concerning the effects of the substance on terrestrial organisms are, in many cases, not available. A contact screening test of toxicity to earthworms has been reported in the literature, the work being undertaken using OECD test methods. The LC50 of diethyl phthalate was 0.85 mg/cm2. There is also a literature report of a study investigating the effects of diethyl phthalate on seedling growth on a single non-target plant species. The 14 day LC50 for growth was 134 mg/kg dry soil.

In accordance with REACH Regulation 1907/2006, Annex IX, Column 2, tests for effects on soil organisms do not need to be conducted as direct and indirect exposure of the soil compartment is unlikely. The substance has little potential to adsorb to soil and is not very persistent. According to the available information about production and processing of the substance, and the uses identified, direct releases of the substance to the terrestrial compartment can be excluded.
