Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Endpoint:
explosive properties of explosives
Data waiving:
study scientifically not necessary / other information available
Justification for data waiving:
the study does not need to be conducted because there are no chemical groups present in the molecule which are associated with explosive properties

Description of key information

Cobalt carbonate does not contain functional groups that are directly associated with explosive properties. It is therefore considered to be void of any explosive properties.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Explosiveness:
non explosive

Additional information

According to Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006, Annex VII, Section 7.11 Column 2 and ECHA Guidance on information requirements and chemical safety assessment, Chapter R.7a: Endpoint specific guidance, section R.7.1.11, December 2016, the study does not need to be conducted. This substance is void of any chemical structures commonly associated with explosive properties, such as metal peroxides, peroxo-acid-anions, azides, and halogen oxides. Cobalt carbonate consists of cobalt cation and carbonate anions which can all be considered as “inert” in the context of explosivity. Therefore, the substance “cobalt carbonate“ may also considered to be void of any explosive properties. Further, it is noted that despite long-term industrial use of the substance, it is not classified for explosive properties according to UN transport regulations.

Justification for classification or non-classification

Cobalt carbonate does not need to be classified according to CLP Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008 since explosive properties are considered non-relevant based on the lack of functional group.
