A skin sensitisation study was performed by the Group Occupational Health Centre of The British Petroleum Company PLC, UK, to assess the potential of the test substance Dimethyl Carbonate to cause skin sensitisation. Although the study did not cite any official test guidelines, the method used was a modified version of the Magnusson-Kligman method, which is a recognised method for this assessment.
Guinea pigs were exposed to the test substance by an intradermal injection, then a topical (epicutaneous) application during the induction phase, followed by a topical challenge exposure at three concentrations.
No reactions were recorded following challenge at concentrations up to 100%. Since the result was so unequivocal, no further challenge was deemed neccesary. The material is concluded to have no allergenic potential in the guinea pig.

The test substance Dimethyl carbonate was found to display no sensitizing potential; the test substance does not require classification as a skin sensitiser on this basis.
