Description of key information

This information requirement is waived, on the basis of Column 2 (Annex VII) guidance indicating that such testing is not necessary for a substance such as biphenyl, the structure and intended uses of which are not indicative of surface-active properties.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

Based on Column 2 of the REACH regulation on standard information requirements (Annex VII), the test does only need to be conducted if, based on structure, surface activity is expected or can be predicted. Considering the chemical structure of the substance and taking the ECHA Endpoint specific guidance (R.7a, p.76-77) into consideration, biphenyl is considered not to have chemical structure/functional groups indicating surface active properties.
