Description of key information

The structural analogue substances methacrylic acid ester of an alcohol mixture with a mean C-number of 13.6, 17.4, LIMA and octadecyl methacrylate proved to be readily biodegradable and were fulfilling the 10-d window criterion.

Additional information

Read across: Octadecyl methacrylate (Fraunhofer 1988a), LIMA (a mixture of C12 to C15 linear and branched alkyl methacrylates, CIT 2001), a mixture of C13 and C15 alkyl methacrylates (Fraunhofer 1988b) and methacrylic acid ester 17.4 (BMG 2008) were demonstrated to be readily biodegradable in biodegadation tests acc. OECD 301 C (modified MITI tests) and OECD 301 B (modified Sturm test). 79%, > 100%, 76.6 % and 97% biodegradatíon were achieved within 28 days, respectively. The 10 day window criteria were fulfilled in all tests.

The long-chain alkyl methacrylate esters (C12 - C20) are all readily biodegradable. This was demonstrated in several guideline studies which cover the range of C12 to C18.
