Endpoint:
flammable solids
Type of information:
experimental study
Adequacy of study:
key study
Study period:
14 Oct 2014
Reliability:
1 (reliable without restriction)
Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
guideline study
Qualifier:
according to guideline
Guideline:
EU Method A.10 (Flammability (Solids))
GLP compliance:
yes (incl. QA statement)
Remarks:
The Department of Health of the Government of the United Kingdom
Key result
Test procedure:
burning rate test: preliminary screening test
Burning time:
0 s
Remarks on result:
other: The sample melted and then blackened. An orange flame was sustained for approximately 5 seconds but did not propagate.

The sample melted and then blackened. An orange flame was sustained for approximately 5 seconds but did not propagate.

From the preliminary screening test the sample was seen to briefly ignite therefore no further testing was required.

Interpretation of results:
not classified based on GHS criteria
Endpoint:
substances / mixtures which in contact with water emit flammable gases
Data waiving:
study scientifically not necessary / other information available
Justification for data waiving:
the study does not need to be conducted because the experience in production or handling shows that the substance does not react with water, e.g. the substance is manufactured with water or washed with water
Endpoint:
pyrophoric solids
Data waiving:
study scientifically not necessary / other information available
Justification for data waiving:
other:
Endpoint:
self-heating substances / mixtures
Type of information:
experimental study
Adequacy of study:
key study
Study period:
28 Nov 2014
Reliability:
1 (reliable without restriction)
Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
guideline study
Reason / purpose for cross-reference:
reference to same study
Qualifier:
according to guideline
Guideline:
other: VDI 2263 (Grewer oven test)
GLP compliance:
yes
Remarks:
The Department of Health of the Government of the United Kingdom
Test procedure:
other: Basket size: 20 mm³
Max. temp. reached:
307
Induction time (h):
2.33
Result:
negative outcome (no effect observed)
Remarks on result:
other: The substance could be excluded from classification as a self-heating solid of UN Class 4.2 as the onset temperature in the screening test exceeded 220 °C
Interpretation of results:
not classified based on GHS criteria

Description of key information

non-flammable on ignition (EU A.10)
no pyrophoric properties
no flammability on contact with water

not self-heating (VDI 2263, preliminary to UN N.4)

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Flammability:
not classified

Additional information

Based on the outcome of the EU A.10 test, the substance is non-flammable on ignition.

Based on experience in handling and use and the chemical structure, pyrophoricity and flammability on contact with water are not to be expected.

Based on the outcome of the Grewer Oven test (VDI 2263), the substance is not self-heating.

Justification for classification or non-classification

The available data on flammability of the test substance do not meet the criteria for classification according to Regulation (EC) 1272/2008, and are therefore conclusive but not sufficient for classification:

No propagation of burning in a test according to EU Method A.10. Based on the chemical structure and experience in handling and use, pyrophoricity and flammability on contact with water are not expected. Self-heating is excluded on the basis of the Grewer Oven test (guideline VDI 2263).
