Only an acute toxicity study with algae is available in which the yeast extract did not show any toxicity. Moreover, acute toxicity to fish and to aquatic invertebrates from S. cerevisiae Lysate dossier are available and show no toxicity. According to the read-across assessment, no toxicity of S. cerevisiae extract is expected in the aquatic compartment. Yeast, yeast extracts and yeast cell wall fractions have widely been fed to poultry, cattle and other livestock. In addition, many animals in ecotoxicity studies are fed or supplemented with yeast or yeast extracts. Yeast S. cerevisiae is one of the most widely used microorganisms as a DFM (Direct-Fed Microbials) in livestock operations. Finally, the The OECD guidelines for the testing of chemicals (OECD series on testing and assessment Number 55/ ENV/JM/MONO(2006)22) refer to the feeding of the aquacultures with yeast, following protocols for sediment toxicity and bioaccumulation test, such as US EPA (report 600/R-99/064 of March 2000).

To conlude, testing to evaluate long-term toxicity to aquatic invertebrates is not considered scientifically necessary and no toxicity of S. cerevisiae to aquatic compartments is expected .
