Description of key information

Disodium disulfite has a low potential to partition into air based on the low vapour pressure of ionic solutions and does not sublime.

Under environmental relevant conditions, disodium disulfite readily dissociates into sulfite anions and sodium cations in aqueous solution. Sulfites are not stable under typical environmental conditions. Environmental transformation reactions include oxidation and reduction depending on the environmental conditions resulting in sulfides and sulfates. Thus, hydrolysis and photodegradation are not relevant as disodium disulfite dissociates rapidly and is transformed e.g. by oxidation, reduction, speciation, precipitation in environmental solutions.
