Description of key information

Fatty acids, C14-18 and C16-18-unsatd., zinc salts is readily biodegradable based on data from analogous substances and fatty acids degrade via the β-oxidation pathway. The environmental fate and distribution of the dissociation products of this substance in water are better assessed according to the dissociation products in water as follows:

(i) the mechanisms for partitioning of Zn2+ in environmental media, including the adsorption and/or absorption by organic matter and living cells, are understood to be different from those traditionally attributed to carbon-based substances. For the transport and distribution of zinc in different environmental compartments, please refer to the respective endpoint summary of the assessment entity "Zinc".

(ii) Using QSAR (KOCWIN v2.00, EPI Suite v4.1),the log Koc values of tetradecanoic acid (C14 saturated), hexadecanoic acid (C16 saturated), octadecanoic acid (C18 saturated), cis-9-hexadecenoic acid (C16 unsat.), 9-octadecenoic acid (C18 unsat.), 9,12-octadecadienoic acid (C18 unsat.) and 9,12,15-octadecatrienoic acid (C18 unsat.) were estimated based on the respective logKoc with 3.54, 4.12, 4.71, 3.80, 4.38, 4.06 and 3.73 (corresponding to Koc values of 3,430, 13,230, 51,050, 6,242, 24,080, 11,360 and 5,357 L/kg), respectively. QSAR estimates indicate an affinity of fatty acids to solid phases. However, C14-18 saturated and C16-18-unsatd. fatty acids are readily biodegradable and thus are not expected to accumulate in the environment.
