Description of key information

Inahaltion studies have shown 1,1,1,2-Tetrafluoroethane (HFC 134a) to be of an extremely low order of acute toxicity, with the 4 hour LC50 in the rat judged to be in excess of 500000ppm (2080000 mg/m3).

Additional information

In accordance with section 2 of REACH Annex XI an acute oral and an acute dermal study do not need to be conducted as the substance is a gas. HFC 134a has an extremely low order of acute toxicity by inhalation. The lowest concentration resulting in death following a 4-hour exposure has been reported to be 567000 ppm (2360000 mg/m3) in rats. The symptoms of acute intoxication are characterised by central nervous system effects due to narcotic properties, seen only at extremely high exposure concentrations (>500000 ppm; 2080000 mg/m3).

Justification for classification or non-classification

The 4 hour LC50 for HFC 134a of >2080000 mg/m3 is far in excess of the upper regulatory limit for acute toxicity classification of 20000mg/m3. Therefore the substance does not need to be classified for acute toxicity according to EU Directive 67/548/EEC and EU Classification, Labelling and Packaging of Substances and Mixtures (CLP) Regulation (EC) N0. 1272/2008.
