Description of key information

Toxicity to the freshwater algae Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata:
EC10, EC20 and EC50(72h) for growth rate and yield >100 mg/L (OECD Guideline 201 and the EU Method C.3)
LOEC(72h) for growth rate and yield >100 mg/L (OECD Guideline 201 and the EU Method C.3)
NOEC(72h) for growth rate and yield >= 100 mg/L (OECD Guideline 201 and the EU Method C.3)

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

In a 72 hour static test the influence of sodium hypophosphite on the growth of the freshwater green algal species Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata was investigated according to the OECD Guideline 201 and the EU Method C.3. The nominal concentrations of the test substance were 4.6, 10, 22, 46 and 100 mg/L.

No significant inhibitory effect on the growth of the algae (average growth rate and yield) during the test period of 72 hours was observed up to and including the highest concentration of 100 mg/L. As a result the 72h EC10, EC20, EC50 and LOEC values for growth rate and yield are higher than 100 mg/L and the NOEC (72h) for growth rate and yield is at least equal to or higher than 100 mg/L.

No differences in shape and size of the algal cells were observed.

Based on the results of this study, sodium hypophosphite would be classified non-hazardous to algae according to the CLP regulation (EC) N° 1272/2008 as the EC50(72h) for growth rate and yield is higher than 100 mg/L.
