Two studies on short-term toxicity of stearic acid to freshwater fish are available.

Richterich and Mühlberg (2001) summarised a non-GLP study conducted in 1987 accroding to DIN 38412/15 with Leuciscus idus under static conditions. Three different concentrations (1000, 3000, and 10000 mg/L) were tested with 100% pure stearic acid. Since no mortality occurred during the 48h test period, the LC50 (48h) was stated to be >10000 mg/L.

Another study which was conducted as a static limit-test according to OECD 203 and GLP (Bogers, 1989) with 98% pure stearic acid also showed no effects after 48h at a test concentration of 1000 mg/L (= EC0 (48h)).

Since the water solubility of stearic acid is very low (0.597 mg/L) the results show, that there is no short-term toxicity to fish up to the limit of the water solubility.
