First-aid measures

General advice:

Immediately remove contaminated clothing. First aid personnel should pay attention to their own safety. Wear protective gloves to avoid skin contamination.

If inhaled: Keep patient calm, remove to fresh air, seek medical attention.

Skin contact: Immediately wash thoroughly with soap and water, seek medical attention.

Contact with eyes: Wash affected eyes for several minutes under running water, seek medical attention.

Ingestion: Rinse mouth immediately. Seek medical advice.

Note to physician: No specific antidote known. Target organs: liver (jaundice), eyes (retina defects).

Fire-fighting measures

Suitable extinguishing media:

extinguishing powder, foam, carbon dioxide; in case of large fires water spray can be used.

Unsuitable extinguishing media:

high volume water jet.

Wear self-contained breathing apparatus and chemical-protective clothing.

Dispose off fire debris and contaminated extinguishing water in accordance with official regulations. Extinguishing water may be toxic to aquatic organisms. Do not allow  extinguishing media enter sewers and surface waters.

Accidental release measures

Personal precautions:

Breathing protection is mandatory (at minimum: filter masks with filter for organic vapours). Avoid contact with skin, eyes and clothing.

Environmental precautions:

Do not discharge into drains/surface waters/groundwater.

Methods for cleaning up:

For large amounts: allow  to solidify and sweep/shovel up.

Handling and storage

Handling:

Ensure thorough ventilation of stores and work areas. Refill and handle product only in closed systems; vented air should pass scrubbers / filters before release to the environment. Prevent electrostatic charge, sources of ignition should be kept well clear, fire extinguishers should be kept handy. Handling only by employees trained in properties of the material and trained in proper use of personal protective equipment, with emphasis on disposal of contaminated gloves and clothing. Take organisational measures to limit any potential exposure, p. e. by limiting exposure time for critical tasks like sampling (should take not more than 5 minutes per week). Before maintenance work, concerned storage devices and transport lines must be flushed clear; cleaning liquid has to be disposed off properly, avoidance of contamination by cleaning liquid has to be ensured.

Storage:

Keep away from food, drink and animal feeding stuffs. Keep containment tightly closed.

Exposure controls / personal protection

Components with workplace control parameters:

101-77-9: methylene-4,4'-dianiline:

TWA value 0.08 mg/m³; 0.01 ppm (EH 40 (UK)).

Skin designation (EH 40 (UK))

Biological Guidance Value: 10 µg/L urine at end of exposure/shift (MAK-commission, 2006, Germany)

The substance can be absorbed through the skin.

Personal protective equipment:

respiratory protection: required if gases/vapours/aerosols are formed; gas-filter for gases/vapours of organic compounds (boiling point > 65 °C, e. g. EN 14387 Type A), or self-contained breathing apparatus.

Hand protection:

Chemical resistant protective gloves (EN 374). Suitable material also with prolonged, direct contact (recommended: Protective index 6, corresponding > 480 minutes of permeation time according to EN 374): nitrile rubber >= 1.3 mm coating thickness or fluoroelastomer nitrile shell, at least 0.425 mm thickness.

Use additional heat protection gloves when handling hot molten masses (EN 407), e. g. of textile or leather.

Stability and reactivity

Hazardous reactions:

Reacts with acids. The progress of reaction is exothermic.

Disposal considerations

Incinerate in suitable incineration plant, observing local authority regulations.

Waste code in accordance with the European waste catalog (EWC): 07 02 08

Contaminated packaging:

Packs that cannot be cleaned should be disposed of in the same manner as the contents.
