Neurotoxic effects seen with sodium formate after 8 h of  incubation:

1) Toxicity in developing cultures: 
Sodium formate: toxic  at </= 40 mM. 
Toxicity of model toxicants:
Cytosine arabinoside: gliotoxic at 0.01 mM.

2) Mature cultures
Sodium formate:  neuronotoxic at </= 60 mM. 
                 cytotoxic  at >/= 120 mM.

Toxicity of model toxicants:
Glutamate neuronotoxic  at </= 5.0 mM; 
Methyl iodide neuronotoxic  at </= 2.50 mM 
               cytotoxic  at >/= 5.0 mM.

Sodium formate caused lesions mainly in large, polygonal neurons.
