Description of key information
Three terrestrial ecotoxicology studies have been conducted following the ECHA Compliance check (Decision number: CCH-D-2114309019 -56 -01/F) issued 16 October 2015.
Effects on terrestrial organisms – Long-term toxicity testing on terrestrial invertebrates (Annex X, Section 9.4.4.; test method: Earthworm reproduction test (Eisenia fetida/Eisenia andrei) (OECD 222):
A study was performed to determine the effects of Oxirane, mono[(C12-14-alkyloxy)methyl] derivs,on the reproduction and growth of the earthworm, Eisenia fetida, in an artificial soil under laboratory conditions. There was no toxicity associated with exposure to any of the tested concentrations and therefore the NOEC for survival, adult body weight and mean number of juveniles was determined to be 1000 mg/kg bw dry soil.
Effects on terrestrial organisms – Long-term toxicity testing on plants (Annex X, Section 9.4.6.; test method: Terrestrial plants, growth test, OECD 208):
This study was carried out with cabbage, carrot, lettuce, tomato, oat and onion to determine if the test substance exerts a detrimental effect to plants during early critical stages in their development in a maximum dose test designed to evaluate the phytotoxic effects of the test substance. Following initial range finding at 0.1, 1, 10, 100 and 1000 mg/kg, the definitive study was conducted as a dose response test at 12.34, 37.04, 111.11, 333.33 and 1000 mg/kg dry soil for all species with an additional rate of 4.12 mg/kg dry soil for tomato.
The NOEC values for effects on germination and survival were 1000 mg/kg dry soil for all plant species. The NOEC values for effects on height were 111.11 mg/kg dry soil for cabbage and carrot, 333.33 mg/kg dry soil for lettuce, tomato and oat and 12.34 mg/kg dry soil for onion. The NOEC values for effects on dry weight were 333.33 mg/kg dry soil for cabbage, lettuce, tomato and oat and 37.04 mg/kg dry soil for carrot and 111.11 mg/kg dry soil for onion.
Effects on terrestrial organisms – Effects on soil micro-organisms (Annex IX, Section 9.4.2.; test method: Soil microorganisms: nitrogen transformation test, EU C.21./OECD 216):
A study was performed to assess the long-term effect of Oxirane, mono[(C12-14-alkyloxy)methyl] deriv, after a single exposure, on the nitrogen and carbon transformation activity of soil microorganisms. Soil microorganisms were exposed to the test item at concentrations of 10, 32, 100, 320 and 1000 mg/kg for 28 days at temperatures of between 18 and 21 °C in the dark with the addition of powdered Lucerne-green-grass meal to act as a respiratory substrate. The inhibitory effect of the test item on nitrogen transformation was assessed by the determination of nitrate concentration in the soil samples on Days 0 and 28 and compared to data obtained from solvent control soil samples. The effect of the test item on the nitrogen transformation activity of the soil microorganisms gave an EC50 of greater than 1000 mg/kg. The No Observed Effect Concentration (NOEC) was 1000 mg/kg.
