Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Nonanal is acutely toxic to algae. Based on inital measured concentrations, the ErC50 was 4.5 mg/L. This result can be read across to N-/iso- C13-C15 aldehydes.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

EC50 for freshwater algae:
4.5 mg/L

Additional information

The growth inhibiting effects of nonanal were investigated on the green alga Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata (reported asSelenastrum capricornutum) in a 72 -h study according to OECD TG 201. The initial test concentrations were set at (nominal/measured): 0/< LOQ (control), 0.25/0.196, 0.50/0.453, 1.0/0.759, 2.0/1.47, 4.0/3.20 and 8.0/6.42 mg/L. Final measured concentrations were <1 to 5 % of nominal concentrations. The test substance concentrations were analytically measured by HPLC/UV after 0 and 72 h. The physico-chemical parameters pH, temperature and light intensity were within the recommended ranges. The validity criteria of OECD TG 201 (March 2006) were fulfilled. Based on initial measured concentrations, the ErC50 was 4.5 mg/L. The NOEC was 0.759 mg/L for growth rate inhibition (Ward, 2003).
