Self-ignition is not considered to be of relevance for this substance as this would require heat to be developed by reaction with oxygen or exothermic decomposition, i.e. heat that cannot be rapidly absorbed by the environment. As this pigment contains metals in the highest oxidised form, they are intrinsically not combustible and can safely be assumed not to be ignitable under the conditions as described in EU-Method A.16. In conclusion, further experimental verification is not considered to be required (in accordance with section 1 of REACH Annex XI).
Furthermore, long-term industrial experience in practical handling of the substance shows that it cannot self-ignite.

Description of key information

According to Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006, Annex VII, Section 7, Column 2, the study does not need to be conducted for solids, if preliminary results exclude self heating of the substance up to 400 °C. The test item hematite, chromium green black did not show any self heating properties in a TGA analysis (see section 4.2 melting point) up to 1000 °C.
